Burnie juniors win bronze at ALAC

Orin Ball and Angus Vrantsis of the Burnie Little Athletics Club headline results from the 2017 Australian Little Athletics Championships with the pair claiming bronze medals at the event held in Sydney last month.

The event was held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre with the pair of medalists joined by fellow Burnie Little Athletics member Amy Hyland as well as Circular Head club member Charli Kay.

Orin claimed a bronze medal in the under-13 age division triple jump where he leapt to a new personal best of 11.56m.

The result improved his personal best jump which was previously at 10.95m.

The Burnie junior was unlucky not to earn two medals at the event having just been pipped in the under-13 long jump.

He finished fourth in the event with a best of 5.44m.

Angus also claimed a bronze medal and had a fantastic meet in Sydney where he qualified for the final of the 80m hurdles event with a time of 13.04 and went on to finish sixth in the final.

In doing so he smashed his previous best time by running 12.76 seconds.

The following day Angus lined up in the 200m heats and ran a personal best time of 27.89 seconds to progress to another final.

He got a great start in the final and managed to improve his time again to 27.49 seconds and win bronze.

Circular Head’s Charli Kay qualified for the final in the under-13 girls 400m and also finished seventh in the 800m and ninth in the javelin.

Burnie’s Amy Hyland qualified for the consolation finals for both the under-13 girls 80m hurdles and 200m hurdles events. She also finished 10th in the triple jump.

Michelle Scolyer of the Burnie Little Athletics Club said all Coastal members were fantastic at the championships and the two boys showcased how strong Tasmanian juniors athletes are.

“Orin and Angus were a real highlights, I think Tasmania only won three medals so to have two from the Coast was great and both the girls did very well too overall,” Scolyer said.

“Orin has been training really hard so it was great for him to get those results and Angus is new to the scene for us but has come in and impressed really well.”

In a further boost for Tasmania, the state claimed the Dick Healy Trophy, awarded to the winner of the smaller associations at under-13 level.

The Tasmanian state team won the under-13 award ahead of the Australian Capital Territory, defeating them by 35-points.
