Rowan Young dreaming of running at Olympics

At age 10, Rowan Young has already shown she has the dedication to match her athletic talent.

The Joondalup Little Athletics Club member is a WA champion hurdler for her age and trains five nights a week, sacrificing leisure time as she eyes a dream to represent Australia in the Olympics.

The Carramar resident has been involved in athletics for three years, showing promise in sprinting and hurdles.

She broke the Joondalup 100m record of 14:10 in the State final earlier this year with a 13:92 return.

But her biggest achievement was the state gold medal she won in the 60m hurdles.

“I worked extremely hard for a year,” she said.

“I ran the fastest time in the state for the hurdles in that season of 10:00.”

The young athlete hopes to be faster than Australian hurdler Brianna Beahan.

In the meantime, she is already setting herself for the Australian All Schools Championships, for which she will be eligible in two years.

Her father Neil Young described his daughter’s dedication with pride, saying she could be seen training in “rain, winds and 37C sunshine”.

“Her mental discipline for a 10-year-old is remarkable,” he said.

“She sacrifices all other after-school activities as training is every night. She does homework on the way to training and often at rest periods between.”

Rowan is a nominee in the Community Newspaper Group’s Local Sports Stars Awards.
